Large Ayutthaya-style Buddha head

Former Kingdom of Siam
17th century

The face is oval-shaped, with wide, curvilinear, perfectly curved superciliary arches meeting at the base of an aquiline nose with dilated nostrils. Almond-shaped eyes with half-closed eyelids, the mouth features a wide smile and full lips with pronounced corners reminiscent of the Sukhothai at.
The hair, dotted with a multitude of little spikes, is defined by a fine border and forms a delicate V on the forehead.

The city of Ayutthaya was founded around 1350 by Prince Ramadhipati, and quickly became the capital of a powerful state, as the newly-formed kingdom encompassed most of the territories that made up Siam. Heir to the previous empires, Ayutthaya developed an eclectic art of great variety and vivacity, blending Khmer and Sukhothai influences.

The last photograph shows a sandstone Buddha head similar to our own at Wat Phra Si Rattana Mahathat (Wat Yai) in Phitsanulok, Thailand. Taken by us in December 2023.
