Shakyamuni Buddha face in grey schist
Afghanistan - Pakistan / Ancient Gandhara region
2nd - 4th century A.D.
The face is a perfect oval, with closed almond-shaped eyes surmounted by fine eyebrows that meet at the base of an aquiline nose with dilated nostrils. Full cheeks and a mouth with full lips and a slight smile give the face an expression of great gentleness.
The hair is treated in delicate, undulating locks, forming a V at the base of the forehead, the ushnisha symbolized here in a high ascetic bun, the ears with long, distended lobes symbolizing the Buddha's royal origin.
For sixteen centuries, the ancient Gandhara region, at the crossroads of Iranian, Greek, Indian and nomadic civilizations, was an almost obligatory passageway for caravans linking the West to China. A Hellenistic background, nurtured by the trade in luxury goods exported from the Mediterranean basin, blends with Parthian and Indian influences to create a Buddhist iconography of great sensitivity.
