Maravijaya Buddha in bumisparsha mudra position
Tibet
13th- 14th centuries
°°° Price can be reasonably negotiated °°°
Representation of Sakyamuni Buddha, or perhaps Akshobya (the position of the thumb on the left hand could indicate that this is the Buddha of the East). Depicted seated, legs crossed in lotus position (vajraparyanka) on a base with a double row of inverted lotus petals, the upper part adorned with gadroons. The right hand is placed on the knee in bumisparsha mudra position (taking the Earth as witness), fingers pointing to the ground and the left hand placed in the lap, palm facing the sky. The enlightened one is dressed in the uttarasangha, with the right shoulder and a large part of the chest uncovered, and a section of the cloth over the left shoulder falling to the middle of the arm, ending in fine folds resting on the ground.
Cold-applied gilding covers the Blessed Man's face and neck. Half-closed eyes enhanced with colored pigments frame an aquiline nose, the latter above a small mouth with thin lips sketching a slight pinched smile. The eyebrows are sharply curved on either side of the urna, and the hair is colored with blue pigments (attesting to the Buddha's peaceful nature) and streaked with small spikes. The skull is surmounted by the usnisa (excrescence) completed by a stylized lotus bud, the earlobes distended by the weight of the ornaments the Enlightened One once wore in his worldly life.
The wax-sealed copper plate features a discreet double vajra.
