Two bronze proofs with golden patina by Auguste Louis Lalouette (1826-1883), depicting "Le Défi" on a marble base. The duelists, dressed in 16th-century fashion, are dressed with great refinement, sword in hand and in defiant stance. Their posture is very elegant, and they are dressed in short, mid-thigh boots revealing their bare legs, an elaborate shirt, cape, feathered hat and earrings.
This work was created in the mid-nineteenth century, at a time of renewed interest in the Gothic and Renaissance styles. This was known as the Gothic Revival style.
