Bronze group from the Grand Tour:
"Les Lutteurs Médicis" (The Medici Wrestlers).
Representing two nude men in full wrestling action.
Based on the marble work in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence (inv. 1914 n.216)
Late 19th century edition,
Bronze with brown patina.
Base in sea-green marble.
Dimensions W 32 X H 28 cm

The antique marble group on which this bronze is based was made in the 1st century B.C. and discovered in 1583 near Porta San Giovanni in Rome. In June of the same year, the group was purchased by Cardinal Ferdinand de' Medici, the future Grand Duke of Tuscany, and is now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence (Haskell and Penny, loc. cit.).
