Biography
Description:Marcel Rau, born in Brussels in 1886, studied sculpture and architecture: trained by Charles Van Der Stappen and Paul Du Bois at the Académie des Beaux-Arts in Brussels, he also attended the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris.
His flourishing career began in 1909 when he won the Prix de Rome for sculpture. Thanks to this prize, he received a travel grant that enabled him to study sculptural and architectural gems throughout Europe.
In 1915, he was appointed inspector of decorative arts and architecture in the art education system. Alongside this official role, he also carried out a number of official and private commissions. He interprets feminine and childlike forms with sensitive, nuanced artistry. His dominant qualities are grace and wit.
After the First World War, he was also commissioned to design various commemorative monuments in Hal, Vielsalm and Ostend, among others. Perhaps his best-known masterpiece is the fifteen-meter-high sculpture of King Albert I on the Albert Canal, which he executed for the "Exposition de l'Eau" in Liège in 1939.
He also created funerary monuments.
Although Rau had studied architecture and been brought up in this milieu - his father, Jules Rau, was a renowned architect and Victor Horta was his godfather - he had no ambition to pursue a career in this direction. He did, however, keep in touch with the world of architecture. He was a friend of Marcel van Goethem, with whom he worked on the renovation of the National Bank.
But Rau was not only active as a sculptor, he also designed a number of coins and medals. He produced ten different types of coin. His best-known coin is probably the 50-centime bronze one from 1952. It features a portrait of a miner. The artist is said to have drawn inspiration from the art of Donatello and Constantin Meunier.
