Le Chasseur Africain, signed P J Mêne: patinated bronze of an African on horseback, rifle in hand and game on the ground, with numerous details bringing the sculpture to life.

Model created by the French sculptor around 1877

Very fine casting and patina, weakness of the rivet holding the rifle to the hunter's shoulder

A prolific artist, Pierre Jules Mêne 1810-1879, was one of the leading French animal sculptors of the 19th century.
As early as 1838, he took part in the Paris Salon; he set up his own foundry workshop, casting and chasing his own work.
His taste for animal sculpture, and above all the quality of his work, made him a great success.
