Large bronze with brown patina after Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) representing Jason holding the Golden Fleece. The whole resting on a black marble base.
The sculpture is made in the so-called contrapposto posture, an attitude where one of the two legs of the character carries the weight of the body, the other being left free and slightly bent.
Jason stands naked (as is usual in sculptures celebrating Greek heroes in Antiquity), wearing only his warrior helmet, he looks to the left. In his right hand the spear and on his left arm the famous and coveted golden fleece.
Jason is the first major original work executed by Bertel Thorvaldsen after his arrival in Rome.
A life-size clay version modeled in 1801 is considered the artist's first important work. Her friend and patron Friederike Brun then gave her funds to execute it in plaster.
This new Jason, this time larger than life, was completed in late 1802. But no buyer came forward and Thorvaldsen was preparing to return to Denmark when a wealthy collector, Sir Thomas Hope, commissioned the final marble sculpture. .
The statue, measuring 242 cm, was not completed until 1828.
The sculpture was acquired by the Thorvaldsen Museum at a public auction in England in 1917.
Very good state of conservation.
First half of the 20th century.
