Pedestal bust
Bronze with golden patina and sea-green marble
Dimensions: H. 17.5 (cm.)
Italy, circa 1700
Bust of a laureate Roman Emperor, Vespasian (?), resting on a counter-base with inverted consoles. Column and base in sea-green marble.
An idealized antique
This bust is one of a large number of small busts in burnished, patinated and gilded metal, often attributed to Italian workshops. They were probably intended to adorn the libraries of enlightened amateurs.
Several of these series have survived to the present day, including our bust.
