Representation of a celestial dancer finely chiseled
India
Middle of the 20th century
Representation of a celestial dancer (surasundari) standing barefoot on her left leg, the right leg bent, the sole of the foot turned outwards. She is adorned with a short dothi plastered to her lower body and decorated with arabesques, her bosom bare with generous breasts. She is adorned with earrings, a necklace as well as bracelets on her arms, wrists, feet and ankles, the dothi girded by a belt with pendants. The right arm, bent and pointing upwards, holds a bell (ganthi) in its hand, the right arm stretched out towards the ground, the hand probably clasping a vajra.
The soft face is characterized by long almond-shaped eyes with half-closed eyelids surmounted by superciliary arches meeting at the base of an aquiline nose, the latter overhanging a mouth with lippish lips.
The elaborate hairstyle is made up of fine strands of hair brought back to the top of the head in a clever triple bun, which is encircled by a fine cord falling on each side of the shoulders.
