Large bronze with brown patina, signed Jean-Louis Grégoire (1840-1890), depicting a young woman reading a letter. With her right hand, the young woman, wearing a crown to hold back her curly hair, conscientiously reads her missive, her gentle face lowered. Dressed in a lightly draped toga with sculpted ornamentation, she dangles her left arm holding another leaf.
An allegory of literature and poetry, this work is finely chased and signed on its terrace "L. Grégoire" and "Société des bronzes".
Jean-Louis Grégoire (1840-1890), the son of a chiseler, exhibited busts of contemporaries, mythological works and, after the defeat of 1870, patriotic subjects at the Salon from 1867 onwards.
Société des bronzes de Paris: In operation approximately from 1875 to 1930, this foundry was located at 41 boulevard du Temple and 14 rue Béranger in Paris. A workshop is also mentioned at 117 boulevard Voltaire.
