Important bronze, green patina, signed Alexandre Ouline (1887-1965). Ouline is known as one of the leading sculptors of the Art Deco movement, and worked in France between 1918 and 1940.
This bronze features a bust of Jean Mermoz in his prime.
Born in 1901, Jean Mermoz, nicknamed l'Archange, was a French aviator and legendary airmailer. He also co-founded the French Social Party in 1936. He died that same year in flight following engine damage, at coordinates 11°08 North, 22°40 West, in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean.
The work stands on a black marble base with a plaque inscribed "Les Prisonniers de Guerre & Évadés Nantais à leur Président 1938".
In addition to its depiction of the great man Mermoz, this work will appeal for its size and quality of workmanship.
