This posture of Buddha seated with hands in bhumisparsha mudra, symbolizes the moment when Shakyamuni attains enlightenment while meditating under the Bodhi tree, touching the earth to call upon the goddess Bhumi to witness his victory over Mara, demon of obstacles, who tries to prevent his awakening through temptation, fear and desire.
