Large bronze dancer with brown patina, on a green marble base: she bears the name Pompeian Dancer on a cartouche. She plays delicately with her veil, balancing on one foot on a flower-covered promontory.
The bronze is signed E Marioton and bears the words "hors concours", "Copyright by Lapointe" and "N°3570".
Eugène Marioton was a French medallist and sculptor (1857-1933): a student at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, he won several awards and a travel grant in 1883. He participated regularly in the Salon de la Société des Artistes français, becoming a member of the jury in 1905 in the sculpture section.
For the 1900 Exposition Universelle, he was one of the artists representing the 36 participating nations in the form of 2.5 m-high figures with his Belgian Miner.
His work is as varied as it is prolific, and some of his creations can be found in museums.
