Bronze sculpture with brown patina signed Edmé Antony Paul Noël (1845-1909), representing Venus and her son, Love. Venus, naked, is holding an arrow that she has just snatched from the hands of Love that she is holding with the other hand at her feet. Love, looking amused, is resting on a stone. The sculpture rests on a white marble base.

Cupid, son of Venus, goddess of beauty, love and seduction, is considered in Roman mythology as the devoted servant of his mother. He is often represented as a small angel carrying a bow and arrow representing his power: according to the mythology, whoever is hit by one of these arrows immediately falls under the spell of the first person he sees.

Edmé Antony Paul Noël is a French sculptor born in 1845. At the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts de Paris, he was a student of Eugène Guillaume, Eugène-Louis Lequesne and Jules Cavelier. Thanks to his "Theseus defeating the Minotaur", he won the "Prix de Rome" in 1868. He started his career at the Salon des artistes français in 1872, before exhibiting at the Salon de la Société nationale des beaux-arts from 1891 to 1901. He was appointed professor of modeling at the evening classes of the École des Beaux-arts in 1905, and died in 1909. He is buried in Paris at the Père-Lachaise cemetery.
