    19th century period, circa 1870.

    This sculpture won a medal of honor at the 1865 Salon.

    Paul Dubois (1827-1905) The son of a notary, he first studied law, then, drawn to sculpture, entered the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1858, where he stayed for a year, then spent four years in Italy, notably in Rome and Florence. Florentine Renaissance sculpture would definitively influence his art.
    He debuted at the 1857 Salon, but it was in 1864 with his Saint John the Baptist Child and 1865 with his Florentine Singer that he achieved fame.
    This work was a great success and was published in Several copies of varying sizes by Ferdinand Barbedienne.
    The silver-plated bronze copy was acquired by the French government in 1866 and is housed in the Musée d'Orsay in Paris.
