Important bronze with brown patina representing "Pegasus carrying the poet towards the regions of the dream" also known as "Apollo on Pegasus" after a model of Jean Alexandre Falguière. It represents a young naked man, riding Pegasus, the winged horse, flying above the globe. The turtle-shell lyre he carries in his left hand means that he is a poet. The whole rests on a round base in sea green marble. The work is signed A.Falguière on the terrace and bears the stamp of the founder "FUMIERE".
This sculpture is part of the neo-Florentine current of classicism in the 19th century with references to the Renaissance, particularly to the male figures of the sculptor Donatello and a classical inspiration of the subject.
Dimension of the marble base : 15,7x15,7x3,1 inch (40x40x8 cm)
Jean Alexandre Joseph FALGUIERE (1831-1900) is a French sculptor, student of Albert-Ernest Carrier-Belleuse and François Jouffroy. In 1859, he won the first Grand Prix de Rome for sculpture, which allowed him to continue his studies at the Villa Medici. He was then named professor at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris and became the master of many artists, the most famous being Antoine Bourdelle. His fame brought him many public commissions for monuments: monument to Balzac to replace the one refused by Rodin, monument to Gambetta and the monument to La Fayette, now in Washington.
The Fumière et Gavignot foundry is an art foundry working as early as 1895 in 32 rue Guersant. The company took over from Thiébault & frères, one of the largest bronze casting workshops of the second half of the 19th century. They realized many monumental works for Falguière, including "Apollo on Pegasus".
