Historic Shankyamuni Buddha in copper alloy, Laos, late 18th/early 19th century.
Elegant copper alloy image depicting the Buddha in bhūmisparśa mudrā, characteristic of the kingdom of Luang Prabang or Vientiane.
The elongated face, finely stretched ears and tapering flame testify to the refinement of Laotian statuary. The delicately engraved sanghati, the finesse of the facial features and the stepped trapezoid base anchor the work in the artistic heritage of late 18th- and early 19th-century Laos from Luang Prabang (1707-1949) or Vientiane (1707-1828).
Beautiful brown patina with traces of old gilding, revealing authentic wear. A piece of remarkable presence, imbued with serenity, witness to Laotian Buddhist art.
