Neo-classical sculpture, in bronze with brown patina, entitled "Love", also called "Love taking a butterfly", signed Antoine-Denis Chaudet (1763-1810) on the terrace.
Chaudet is a French sculptor and painter known for having won the first Prix de Rome for sculpture in 1784. He was a member of the French Academy in Rome, then of the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture and finally Professor of Fine Arts from Paris.
This work is Love in the guise of a winged adolescent, with a delicate posture, playing innocently with a butterfly that has come to gather the juice of a rose.
The original of this sculpture, in marble, dating from 1817, completed posthumously, is now on display at the Louvre Museum in Paris.
Through this bucolic and refined work, Chaudet was able to express sensitivity, restraint and grace.
