Sculptor, medalist and author of monuments and numerous busts, Josef Proszowski is a Polish artist. In 1925, he began his studies at the School of Fine Arts in Warsaw where he became a member of the “Forma” Sculpture Cooperative. In 1930, he came third in a competition for the commemorative medal of the November Uprising (uprising of the Kingdom of Poland against Tsar Nicolas I, King of Poland, and against the abuses of Russian tutelage, between November 1830 and October 1831 ).
Author of numerous monuments, he notably created the one commemorating the Battle of Tannenberg in Uzdów. Active during the German occupation, he was taken prisoner of war in a camp near Wrocław after the fall of the Warsaw Uprising. He remained there until the end of the war.
In 1951, he obtained a distinction for his Monument to Frédéric Chopin project. In the first half of the 1950s, Proszowski mainly made busts, and the one we present can be dated to this period.
In 1956, he obtained an honorary distinction for his sculptures presented at the International Exhibition of Sculpture and Graphic Design in Carrara, Italy.
