Antique burnished bronze sculpture representing a woman's head (NINA) signed by the Gemito Chiurazzi gallery.
The woman with the slightly sad expression is the artist's wife who depicts her with a veil on her head.
Vincenzo Gemito (Naples, July 16, 1852 - Naples, March 1, 1929) was an Italian sculptor, designer and goldsmith. Largely self-taught and intolerant of academic canons, Gemito trained himself by drawing on the alleys of the historic center of Naples and the sculptures of the Archaeological Museum. His prolific artistic activity, which led him to the height of success at the Paris Salons in 1876-77, was interrupted by an internal intellectual crisis, due to which he separated himself from the world for eighteen years; he did not return to public life until 1909, then died twenty years later.
Gemit's production includes vigorous drawings, terracotta figures and a large number of sculptures, all depicting popular Neapolitan scenes with a high pictorial intensity; among his main works we can mention the Pescatorello, the Acquaiolo (the original silver cast is in the Cenedese Museum in Vittorio Veneto), the statue of Charles V on the façade of the Royal Palace in Naples, the Zingara and the self-portraits.
