Borghese" Gladiator
Bronze with brown patina on marble base
Dimensions : H. 36 ; W. 26 (cm.)
France, circa 1900
Discovered during an excavation commissioned by Scipio Borghese in the first decade of the 17th century, the fragments were probably entrusted to the talented Nicolas Cordier for restoration. A Greek original, bearing a signature on the trunk, it never ceased to fascinate admirers, and did so within the space of twenty years. Casts and copies were commissioned all over Europe. By imperial decree in 1807, the work became the property of the French crown. Since then, it has been housed in the Musée du Louvre.
This is a reduction produced and marketed by the museum itself.
Condition report:
Very minor chips to base and light wear to patina.
