    Extract from grespuisaye.fr:
"Originally from St Amand, Eugène Lion is one of those families whose members are inextricably linked with pottery. So it was only natural that he should join the family workshop run by his father Amand, located at "La Forge" on the outskirts of the village.
In 1888, when the Parisian sculptor CARRIES came to learn about ceramics, Eugène was just 21 and his father Amand 50. Both opened the doors of their studios to him. But it was Eugène above all who quickly understood the opportunity to open up to new horizons; at the end of the century, the world and its clientele were looking for a new aesthetic.
Indeed, before the arrival of CARRIES in St Amand, no workshop had imagined producing glazed decorative pieces. Of course, some superb slag-glazed stoneware would emerge from the kilns of local craftsmen, but these creations remained, without any pejorative intent, in the realm of tradition.
Very early on, therefore, our young Eugène became imbued with the innovative impetus initiated by the master CARRIES. This influence would last among his followers until the Great War of 1914-1918. This transmission is attested by numerous writings, notably by Jeanneney, but also with Abbé Pacton, and William Lee by double signatures on the backs of stoneware.

Eugène Lion, with his creative imagination and mastery of his art, produced a great deal, mainly decorative pieces: vases of all shapes and sizes, generally turned, glazed, sometimes deformed or striated. His color palette: browns, blacks, ochres and turquoise blues, later taken up by many of his followers. One particularity, the development of a copper-red enamel in the 1920s, gave him an already well-established reputation.
He often exhibited at the Groupe d'Emulation Artistique du Nivernais show in Nevers (from 1922 to 1938), but also sold at his studio.<
Welcoming, altruistic and willing to give of his time to help others, he welcomed many trainees and other enthusiasts in search of authentic craftsmanship, including the most famous, Jeanne Boutet de Monvel, just before the Second World War. It was she, the future Mme Pierlot, who founded Poterie de Ratilly with her husband in the 1950s.
The LION workshop was taken over by her son Pierre and daughter Thérèse in 1945, after Eugène's death, and another story began!
