    "Originally from St Amand, Eugène Lion is one of those families whose members are inseparably linked to pottery. As a result, it is only natural that he will integrate the family workshop run by his father Amand, a workshop located instead -says "La Forge" when leaving the village.
    In 1888, when the Parisian sculptor CARRIES came to learn about ceramic practices, Eugène was only 21 years old and his father Amand 50 years old. Both will open wide the door of their studio to him. But it was above all Eugene who quickly understood the opportunity to open up to new horizons; at the end of the century, the world, the clientele, was looking for a new aesthetic.
    Indeed, before the arrival of CARRIES in St Amand, no workshop had imagined producing enamelled decorative pieces. Of course, superb slag-enameled stoneware will come out of the ovens of local craftsmen, but these creations will remain without any pejorative intention in the domain of tradition.
    Very early on, therefore, our young Eugene will become impregnated with this innovative momentum initiated by the master CARRIES. Influence which will last among the followers until "the great war 1914-1918". This transmission is attested by numerous writings, notably by Jeanneney but also with Abbé Pacton, and William Lee by the affixing of double signatures on the back of the sandstone.

    Eugene Lion, of a creative imagination, of a great mastery of his art, produced much; mainly decorative pieces; vases of all shapes and sizes, usually turned, glazed, sometimes warped or ridged. His color palette: browns, blacks, ochres and turquoise blue; subsequently taken up by number of followers. A special feature, the development of a copper-red enamel in the 1920s, gave it an already well-established reputation.
    He often exhibited at the Salon du Groupe d'Emulation Artistique du Nivernais in Nevers (from 1922 to 1938), but also sold at his studio.<
    With a welcoming, altruistic temperament, willingly giving his time to transmission, he received many trainees and other amateurs in search of authentic craftsmanship; notably for the most famous, Jeanne Boutet de Monvel just before the last war; it was she, the future Mrs. Pierlot, who founded Poterie de Ratilly in the 1950s with her husband.
    The LION workshop will be taken over by his son Pierre and his daughter Thérèse in 1945 on the death of Eugène; another tale will then begin!"
