Imari porcelain refers to Japanese ceramics produced in the ancient province of Hizen on the island of Kyûshû, which corresponds roughly to the Saga area, mainly in kilns in the town of Anta. Until the end of the 18th century, porcelain from this province was grouped together and exported from the port of Imari, which gave its name to this production. However, "Anta porcelain" is also used to designate the same thing. A large number of styles are distinguished, but dating is often approximate, at least for the earliest ones.
The kinrande style can be recognized by its three dominant colors: cobalt blue, saffron iron red and the porcelain's white ground (these colors are not exclusive), enhanced by gold. The highly floral iconography incorporates elements from the animal kingdom and the mineral world.
The brocade (fabric) effect often achieved by the motifs, the interplay of colors and the composition was bound to flatter the European courts eager for trompe-l'œil. They had a highly original way of exploiting space and a flair for asymmetrical composition.
