Tulip tree vase
Painted porcelain enhanced with gilding
Trace of signature in iron red
Dimensions: H. 20 (cm.)
Paris, circa 1830
Curious and rare pan-shaped vase with a strongly flared neck. Richly decorated with alternating sinister floral morifs and bird medallions. A delicate touch, the eggs in the basket are represented in relief. An explanatory note was slipped into the vase, and despite the absence of most of the maker's signature, it is possible to link this vase to his production, notably through the Etruscan palmettes and Greek friezes in red-orange, which can be found on many Greek Revival pieces.
Denuelle in Paris
In 1819, two partners, Cadet de Vaux and Denuelle, took over an old factory near Crussol. Three years later, Denuelle remained alone. With imitation tortoiseshell backgrounds and matt gold ornamentation, he was successful enough to win the patronage of the Duchess de Berry. In 1834, production was transferred to La Seynie, in the Limousin region, but the pieces were still being decorated in Paris, in the depot now located on boulevard Saint-Denis.
Condition report: the decoration is very slightly missing, but the pieces are in exemplary condition.
