This pair of porcelain pedestal dishes were made in China during the later part of the 19th c, possibly early 20th. Bencharong wares were tradtiionally made to order for export to Thailand. This pair are very typical of later examples pieces having a more roughly painted, rather stereotypical pattern and were probably made more generally for the SE Asian market as a whole.
They are very charming and colourful. The condition, as can be seen in the photos, is pretty good. There are the expected faults from manufacture and use such as glazing/kiln faults, wear to the enamels and a little staining. One is undamaged; the other has two small chips to the rim and some dots of wayward enamel (see the three photos of the inside of the bowls). The latter also wobbles a little but that is a manufacturing issue. Even though these were hastily decorated, they feel nicely potted and are very decorative.
Although I am selling these together, they are not an exact pair. The decoration is slightly different and one has a diameter of roughly 9.7 cms, the other is more like 9.5 cms. Both are ca. 4.2 cms high and weigh about 127 g.
