Pair of litron cups with large saucers, beautifully decorated with gold Greek friezes on a navy blue background and gilded palmettes. The cups and saucers bear the Spode signature in iron red, with decoration number 742.

The Spode factory is based in Stoke on Trent, England. Josiah Spode I (1733-1797) bought the factory in 1770 from John Turner's workshop, which successfully copied the great French manufactures such as Sèvres. The manufacture of translucent organic porcelain known as "bone china" did not begin until 1795. Our mug dates from the 1790s, in the French Directoire style.

They are in excellent condition.
