These two figurines enjoyed great success in the 19th century, and were widely copied and reproduced in bronze, marble or biscuit. The most popular models in biscuit were those made by Dihl et Guérhard.

For a long time, they were wrongly attributed to the Italian sculptor Antonio Canova, but since then, originals by Charles-Gabriel Sauvage dit Lemire have been discovered in the Louvre collections. Our two pendant figurines are of fine quality, marked "Canova" and Samson's mark: interlaced S.
