This is the work of Jean Bonvoisin, a renowned painter of the late 18th century.
His father was an art dealer and his mother an artist. A pupil of Callet and then Doyen, he won the second Prix de Rome for painting in 1774, behind the celebrated Jacques - Louis David.
In 1775, he won the first Prix de Rome with his Aman confounded by Esther before Ahasuerus.
During the Revolution, he was appointed administrator of the Musée Central des Arts, the forerunner of today's Musée du Louvre.
Under the Restoration, he became a professor at the Ecole royale gratuite de dessin. He died in Paris in 1837.
In 1871, the painter Constant Misbach donated a portrait of Jean Bonvoisin to the Musée du Louvre.
