Sarandis Karavousis studied painting at the Athens School of Fine Arts between 1959 and 1963 with Yannis Moralis.
In 1967, he was awarded a scholarship by the French government to study in Paris at the École des Beaux Arts. He continued his theoretical studies at the École Pratique des Hautes Études, the Sorbonne and the École du Louvre.
Karavousis is one of the leading exponents of contemporary Greek metaphysical painting. The conventional representation of everyday objects, archaeological finds, statues and ruins is combined with the depiction of esoteric and imaginary landscapes.
His work is characterized by a pervasive sense of mystery, symbolism, enigma and the powerful persistence of memory. His work refers to Morandi, Giorgio de Chirico, Carlo Carra and the legacy of Greek history. He develops a personal language characterized by sensitive tones, interior lighting and artificial perspective.
Since 1967, he has divided his time between Paris and Athens. In 1984, he was awarded the Prix Drouant-Cartier.
Karavousis has had numerous solo exhibitions in Greece and France, and has taken part in many prestigious group shows such as: Salon Comparaisons 1974-1990, Paris, Salon de la Société National des Beaux Arts 1975-1987, Paris, FIAC 1977 and 1978, Paris. In addition, he exhibited at the Sao Paolo Biennial in 1979, the Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris in 1990 and the "Art & Patrimoine" exhibition in Paris in 1993, to name but a few.
His work can be found in numerous public and private collections, including: Galerie Nationale d'Athènes, Galerie Municipale d'Athènes, Galerie Averoff, Banque Nationale de Grèce, Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris and Bibliothèque Nationale de Paris.
