Beaune, 1823 - Beaune, 1886
Oil on canvas
60 x 73 cm (76 x 90 cm with frame)
Signed and dated lower right "hM / 1852 ".
From 1840, Hippolyte Michaud studied at the Dijon School of Fine Arts under Anatole Devosge, before joining Léon Cogniet's studio in Paris in 1843. Michaud exhibited for the first time at the 1846 Paris Salon, but returned to Beaune and then to Dijon.
In 1853, Michaud scored his first success with his painting "Le corps meurt, l'esprit reste", a work acquired by the French state and now in the Musée des Beaux-arts de Beaune. He made a trip to Italy in 1860. In 1864, he became curator of the Musée des Beaux-arts de Beaune. In 1865, he was once again noticed by critics for his painting "La mansarde". Théophile Gautier praised it, and the large painting was acquired by the French state. In it, Michaud depicts the artist's attic dreams in allegorical form! In this painting, as in many others, we can see the main characteristics of the painter's art: a highly drawn, very academic style, with at the same time a powerful rendering of the subject matter, with strong chiaroscuro and beautiful colors.
Our painting is a beautiful still life with cabbage, melon, peaches, grapes and pears. Once again, the variety of fruits shows a beautiful rendering of materials, with lots of volume and beautiful colors. The painting is dated 1852. At the 1867 Salon, Michaud exhibited a painting with a similar subject, entitled "Divers fruits des vignes de Beaune".
