The painting examined here must be attributed to the production of the workshop of Giovanni Stanchi (Rome 1608 - 1675); The 'Stanchi' (founder Giovanni, with brothers Niccolò and Angelo) were one of the most fervent still-life studios in Baroque Rome from 1630 onwards, sought after by the greatest families of the aristocracy, from the Colonna to the Chigi, via the Rospigliosi, and present since the end of the century in the Medici collections. Their production, of extremely varied but stylistically coherent types, can be subdivided according to the subjects on offer: first of all, garlands, of which the canvas on offer is a fine example, linked to the Flemish model made famous by Daniel Seghers in Rome, and probably largely related to Giovanni; the style of the work could well be close to the works of Niccolò, active in Rome for most of the seventeenth century, younger brother and owner of the workshop after Giovanni's death. With regard to the portrait of the Virgin in the center of the garland, it must be said that, in this type of composition, the figures were often entrusted to a specialized painter, different from the flower painters. Carlo Maratta, for example, often collaborated with important workshops, including Stanchi and Mario Nuzzi, complementing their floral compositions with his religious subjects (see details). This is the case, for example, of the magnificent mirrors created by Giovanni Stanchi in 1670 for the gallery of Palazzo Colonna in collaboration with Carlo Maratta (Garland of flowers with four cherubs and Vase of flowers with five cherubs), in competition with Mario dei Fiori, author of the other two; as for Nicolò, the younger brother who owned the store after Giovanni's death, the mirrors of Palazzo Borghese, executed in 1675 in collaboration with Ciro Ferri.
