A Flemish work from the workshop of Frans Francken, active in Antwerp until 1642. The vivid polychromy, the quality of the details, particularly the draperies, and the consistently expressive faces of this Flemish school are remarkable.
This work, illustrating a joyous passage from the Gospel according to Saint John, is an unusual iconography, when Jesus, Mary, and the disciples are invited to a wedding banquet at Cana. When wine runs out, Jesus fills jars with water and transforms it into very good wine and in abundance. Almost a pre-Eucharistic symbol!
