Russian Orthodox icon (oil on panel) depicting the scene of the Dormition* of the Virgin Mary, with the Mother of God lying in the center, asleep in death, surrounded by the Apostles, above her Christ in Glory with the Virgin's soul on his left arm, from South Russia, late 18th century.
This icon is in good condition, in its original state. The panel is slightly curved.

* The term Dormition is used, in Christian vocabulary, to designate the death of saints and the pious faithful when it is not a violent death. The term is particularly applied to the death of Mary, Mother of Jesus. The dormition of the Mother of God is often referred to simply as Dormition, because it is dormition par excellence. The Eastern Churches have kept this ancient name in the form The Dormition of the Theotokos (Mother of God).
