Christ, radiant with light, advances above the tomb, arms open and holding a banner in his right hand, while the guards in their heavy armor around him are barely awake. Everything is a contrast: the light of Christ in the midst of the darkness of night, his white shroud amid the heavy dark armor, the verticality of Jesus facing his slumped bodies. It is a very much alive Jesus that we can contemplate amidst the guards surprised in their sleep: the soldier in the foreground is so completely opposed to the risen Jesus that he appears dead.
