Early 19th century French or Italian school, Madonna of the Chair, carrying the infant Jesus on her lap with Saint John the Baptist. The original of this painting by Raphael dates from his Roman period (1508-1520) and is currently on display at the Pitti Palace in Florence. Restoration-period oil on canvas, circa 1820, in its original gilded wood frame, square format with round view, from the Restoration Empire period.
Our painting is probably a souvenir of the Grand Tour, the aristocratic educational journey across Europe undertaken by young men from the highest classes of European society from the 17th to the 19th century. Although the subject of La Vierge à la Chaise has been much interpreted and copied, with varying degrees of skill, our painting is a fine, well-made, high-quality version. Its beautiful round-view frame makes it a highly decorative piece. Ideal to complement a 19th-century neoclassical décor.
Very good condition, on its original canvas, painting and frame cleaned by our restorers.
