Oil on panel depicting the Vision of Saint Francis of Assisi*, in ecstasy before Mary Magdalene appearing to him with Christ's shroud; he is holding a crucifix, a rosary and a Vanitas on his lap, most likely from the Southern European school, probably after Francisco Ribalta (Spanish painter 1565-1628), late 17th-early 18th century.
The painting is in good condition. The frame is later.
Note: a restored crack in the panel (traces of restoration), some weathering of the paint, see photos.
*Francis of Assisi
Italian Catholic religious, founder of the Order of Friars Minor (commonly known as the Franciscan Order), characterized by prayer, poverty, evangelization and respect for creation. He was canonized in 1228 by Pope Gregory IX and celebrated on October 4 in the Catholic liturgical calendar. One day, while listening to a passage from the Gospel, he came up with an answer to what he was looking for: to spend his life loving all of creation. So he transformed his life, made himself poor, and set about proclaiming the Bible's messages of joy, hope and love, and bringing peace to people and all creation. He dresses in a gray garment and girds his waist with a cord. In this way, he wears the garment of the poor of his time. He is often depicted in iconography as receiving the stigmata of Christ.
