Salome at Herod's banquet
A work of the Flemish school attributed to Frans Francken and his workshop (Antwerp 1581 - 1642), who liked to take up biblical themes and in particular the great banquets of history (the Feast of Balthazar, Esther, Herod, Lazarus...).
To be compared with the painting representing Esther's banquet that I also present on Proantic.
The story in Mark's Gospel describes Herod holding a banquet for his high officials and military commanders, as well as high-ranking men from Galilee. At the banquet, Herod's daughter dances before him. He is delighted and offers her everything she asks for in return. The girl asks her mother what she should ask for, and she tells her to ask for John the Baptist's head. Herod reluctantly orders John's beheading. His head, depicted here in Holiness, will be delivered to Salome, at her request, "on a platter".
This is a large oil on canvas (100 cm x 81 cm), unframed - Repainting and retouching.
This painting was exhibited at the Musée Georges de la Tous in Vic sur Seille.
