A very fine oil on canvas, attributed to the workshop of Jacques Louis David, produced in the late 18th or early 19th century.
A fragment or a highly accomplished preparatory work, the work could even have been produced by the Master, given the similarity of the technique and pictorial details.
In the opinion of several specialists and historians consulted, the man depicted is probably Ulysses, King of Ithaca, one of the most famous heroes of Greek mythology.
Very good condition, original stretcher and canvas.
Certificate of authenticity and attribution from Monsieur René Millet, supplied to the purchaser.
Beautiful gilded wood frame from the Empire-Consulate period.
Dimensions:
Outside frame 43 cm / 30 cm
With frame 60 cm / 52.5 cm
Jacques Louis David's studio, which rapidly became the École de David, was one of the most sought-after places for artistic training between 1781, when he was accepted into the Académie de Peinture, and his flight to Brussels in 1816.
We also know a great deal about the life of the studio, both from a large number of extant letters and from the recollections of Etienne-Jean Delécluze, who joined the studio in 1796.
Initially based in the Louvre, David had set up a studio there for his teaching and production needs. This space was named "l'atelier des Horaces" in homage to the painting composed in 1784 and stored there.
