18th-century French school, large oil-on-canvas portrait of an aristocratic officer in cuirass, black bow tie and wig, early Louis XV circa 1740. It is presented in a very fine rocaille frame in carved and gilded wood, Provencal work from the mid-18th century.
Given the richness of the gold cuirass, crimson coat with fur lapel and white belt, this is undoubtedly the work of a senior officer, certainly of high birth, but as yet unidentified.
The painting is in excellent condition, with no repaints on the face, on its original canvas in its beautiful original Louis XV carved and gilded wooden frame, gilded with gold leaf and cleaned by our gilder. The frame retains its original 18th-century gilding.
