It is very difficult to get a precise idea of the work of Pierre Gobert, a prolific artist but too often poorly copied. Although received at the Royal Academy of Painting and Sculpture in 1701, he still remains today and sometimes unfairly in the shadow of his prestigious colleagues Hyacinthe Rigaud, Nicolas de Largillière and François de Troy.
Pierre Gobert's work suffers indeed from portraits that regularly go on sale as being "attributed to...", "follower of...", "circle of..." or "manner of...".
Our painting does not therefore escape, a priori, the trap of attribution.
But the grace of the model, her fixed attitude and gaze (typical characteristics of Pierre Gobert's portraits), the delicacy with which she holds the pages of her book in one hand and her cape in the other, the rendering of the fabrics, everything, even the ribbon that holds back her blond hair, contributes to underlining the quality of the composition and its connection to the painter's corpus.

The light halo around the face and the color of the clothes seem to designate the Holy Virgin.

Our painting is presented on its original canvas and in a very beautiful period frame that perfectly highlights it.
