This work depicts Alice Saffroy, but it is uncertain whether it was made by Claudius Lavergne (1814-1887), according to the handwritten label on the back. It is a fine quality portrait of a woman, with attractive workmanship.
Louis-Eugène Bion, born in Paris on April 12, 1807 and died in Versailles on January 21, 1860, was a French sculptor. He married Aline-Edme Saffroy and had a son, Paul-Laurent, who was also a sculptor.
The work has not been restored, and the various small tears, wear and missing paint must be accepted. It is warped, but in generally acceptable condition for a non-specialist with a love of nature.
