Jean Jannel was born in Paris on April 20, 1894. He was a student of Luc Olivier Merson at the École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris and participated in the Salons des Artistes Français as well as the Salons des Indépendants. As a painter of femininity, he had his wife as his exclusive model. Jannel was a member of the Cercle des Peintres des Deux-Monts, located at 13 boulevard Malesherbes, near the church of the Madeleine in Paris. This circle aimed to create a meeting and exhibition space for artists from Montmartre and Montparnasse. This is how he met Raymond Besse, Robert Falcucci, Pierre Bogdanoff and Joseph Crozes.
