Based on the work by Charles Thévenin: Impressive full-length portrait of Charles Pierre François Augereau, Napoleon's marshal.
He is shown here at the famous Arcole bridge during the Italian campaign.
Nicknamed "Le fier brigand" (The Proud Brigand), he particularly distinguished himself in 1796 at the Battle of Castiglione. The French army was in a critical position, and he was the only one to recommend an attack, winning the day thanks to his tactics and military maneuvers. This feat of arms led Bonaparte, once Emperor, to appoint him Duke of Castiglione.
This oil on canvas in a wooden frame comes from the Château de Prat in the Ariège region of France. Built in the 13th century, it was originally the residence of the Counts of Comminges.
The painting is part of an important series of four large portraits of Empire figures commissioned by the château's former owner and now in our possession: Maréchal Augereau, Maréchal Victor, Maréchal Sérurier and Charles-Maurice de Talleyrand.
