Henri Serrur (1794–1876)
Portrait of a Man in Front of a Bookcase
Oil on canvas signed and dated 1828 lower right

Dimension: 33 x 24.5 cm
Dimension with frame: 40 x 32 cm

Although the artist first studied in Lille, he obtained a pension in 1815 to complete his studies in Paris. There he was a student of JB Regnault at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He exhibited at the Salon between 1819 and 1850. He was awarded a 3rd class medal in 1836 and a 2nd class medal in 1837.
He specialized in scenes from ancient or medieval history and battles. He also produced portraits, including that of Charles X.
Ours, with its detail and size, suggests an intimate portrait of a man of good condition. The green curtain revealing a few books may suggest that this is a man from the French literary world.
