François Martin-Kavel painted portraits of nude women or women dressed in exotic costumes ("La belle gitane", "L'ombrelle", "Jeune femme au manchon", "La coquette surprise"...). He exhibited at the Salon des Artistes Français between 1881 and 1931.
In 1892, he visited the United States for the first time, in New York. Martin-Kavel was particularly sought-after in North America, and appreciated for his seductive female figures with their fine craftsmanship (note the remarkable detail of the jewelry and the delicacy of the lady's fingers in our painting). Even today, his paintings regularly sell at auction across the Atlantic.
Martin Kavel was one of those painters who sought to highlight feminine beauty from the 1880s onwards, during the Belle Epoque. But while some of these portraits show a certain mawkishness, our portrait is simply that of a beautiful woman with a charming look and smile, and a realistic psychology reminiscent of the art of Toulouse-Lautrec. In fact, given the prim stance, the heavily made-up face and the presence of a fan, it's possible that this is the portrait of an actress.
