    Very large portrait of Princess Elisabeth of Prussia with her two sons Louis (future Grand Duke of Hesse) and Henri (Prince of Hesse and the Rhine, general of the cavalry): she is depicted seated in her interior, showing her younger son a painting; her eldest son remains slightly behind, looking pensive.

    This painting is signed lower left Hermelein.

    Carl Johann Nepomuk Hermelein painter born in Mainz in 1807 and died in Vienna in 1884.
    Studying in Paris with Paul Delaroche and at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Vienna, his career took place mainly between France, Prussia and Austria. After his meeting with the Austrian Chancellor Prince Metternich in 1837, he participated for several years in the exhibition of the Darmstadt Art Association (years 1837-1838)
    He will mainly paint paintings for altars but also portraits or historical scenes.
