Large 19th-century academic drawing of the three Horatii, from the iconography of the famous 1785 painting by French painter Jacques-Louis David entitled "Le Serment des Horaces" ("The Oath of the Horatii").
Currently housed in the Musée du Louvre.
This neoclassical masterpiece, commissioned by King Louis XVI for a historical subject, depicts a famous episode in Roman history: the battle between three champions of Rome, the Horatii, and the three champions of Alba, the Curiatii. This duel was necessary to put an end to a bloody war. The painting immortalizes the scene in which the three Horatii swear an oath before going into battle.
The outcome of this battle will see only one Horace return alive.

This fine work of art is set off by an elegant oak frame with gilded beading.

Second half of the 19th century.
Good condition.
