This bucolic painting describes the end of a day. It seizes the moment when one leads the animals to drink. The work can be compared to the compositions of the realist painters of the 19th century. This movement was followed by many artists during this period, we have not found anything on the artist and the monogram on the bottom of the painting did not allow us to identify him. The woman's clothing, in profile, suggests trimmings around the collar and perhaps a sort of breastplate, probably a regional outfit that we have not located. In any case, this representation is in the vein of what was produced by the painters of peasant life in the nineteenth century, such as Leon Lhermitte, Jules Breton or Jean-Francois Millet, they enjoyed representing with realism the daily life in the country. They were the singers of a time when the harshness of the work in the fields imposed difficult living conditions to the country population, the vision of this time that they transmitted to us, through their work, is always marked by a lot of poetry. I found by chance this reflection concerning Jean François Millet and Léon Lhermitte, Vincent Van Gogh who had a great admiration for Millet and Lhermitte, qualified the first one of "Michelangelo of the farmers" and the second one of "absolute master of the portrait". This oil on canvas is in a good state of preservation, but has undergone some minor restorations.
